Pewter is a malleable and corrosion-resistant material, making it ideal for creating detailed and durable objects. Its popularity in crafts and the manufacture of various objects is due to these properties.

History and quantities produced of pewter objects

Pewter has been used since the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as a practical use for kitchen utensils or tableware and it was not until the 19th century that pewter saw mass production and standardization with the industrial revolution. Pewter items were commonly used in taverns and homes for their sturdiness and relatively low cost. European colonization led to the export of pewter objects to the colonies, where they were used in households and public establishments.

Pewter objects have therefore been popular in different periods of history, often depending on the practical needs and aesthetic trends of each era. Today, pewter is mainly valued for its traditional and artisanal appearance, with a market focused on decorative and collectible objects.

In the year 2000, global production of refined tin was approximately 226,000 tons per year, according to the International Tin Association (ITA). Tin is used in a variety of industries, including electronics (soldering), packaging (tin-plated steel cans), chemicals and alloys, and in the manufacture of pewter objects. Pewter objects represent a smaller part of this production, as much of the tin is used in soldering and packaging. By some estimates, around 20% of tin produced is used for applications other than soldering and packaging, which includes pewter objects, alloys and chemicals.

Extrapolating from this data, if we assume that pewter objects represent a fraction of this diverse use, we could estimate that a small but significant portion of tin is used to make pewter objects, perhaps around 5% to 10% of total production.
